Review:

This book ‘The Ice Monster’ is written by David Walliams who has also written the books: Fing, Awful Aunty, Bad Dad, Midnight Gang, Gangster Granny and more.

This story is set in London near the Natural History Museum and in the North Pole.

This book is all about a young girl from an orphanage who has become an urchin living on the streets. While she is on the streets, the little girl called Elsie, takes a look around. She wanders down the street heading towards the Natural History Museum and decides to have a look inside.

One day, she snatches a newspaper off someone and reads the headline on the front cover ‘Woolly Mammoth comes to the Natural History Museum to be preserved.’ Find out more in the book.

I have read some of David Walliams’ books before but none of them are like this book, The Ice Monster, because this one has a quest and the others I have read don’t.

I recommend this book to every one who is 6 and above because there is one part in the story when Elsie gets hit by lightning and nearly dies that little ones might be scared of.

I think the story is telling you that just because you don’t look like another person doesn’t mean you can’t be friends with them. This book demonstrates loyalty between two of the characters because they have a friendly relationship because they always look out for each other.

I enjoyed this book because it is really funny particularly when Dotty, the cleaner for the Natural History Museum, is very silly and doesn’t really know what she is doing.

David Walliams sometimes uses more grown up words and words which aren’t real. He marks these words with a star. He then explains the meaning of the word at the bottom of the page. The made up words remind me of Roald Dahl’s style of writing.

David Walliams really sets the scene for me as I could picture myself in London and the North Pole.
