The Sleeping Sword

Review:

The sleeping sword is a book about a boy whose name is Bun. He jumped into the sea with no water to jump into and hit his head, so he became blind. When he adapted to blindness he carried a stick to stop himself from falling over any unexpected objects. One day he was walking into the field to tell his dad that dinner was ready and fell down a mysterious hole in the ground! The tractor was coming closer and closer until his dad saw him and stopped the tractor. Later that night dad rushed in and quickly told them that the hole was a grave and he had found a sword and shield in it. They were very heavy and were huge but when he held it, it gave a strange amount of tingling energy around his body. Read the book to find out more!

Review:

Danny and his exciting father live cosily in a small gypsy caravan behind the filling station and workshop that they own. Danny has a surprise when he wakes up to find that his dad is missing. He waits to see if he comes back and when he does, they have a midnight feast of hot chocolate and cheese sandwiches while his dad tells Danny his deep, dark secret.

Danny’s father is an expert pheasant poacher and has an urge to do it again but one night he falls down a pit trap that the keepers of Mr Victor Hazel’s wood have set. Luckily, Danny wakes and realises that his dad’s not back and decides to go on a dangerous trip in a baby Austin to rescue his dad.

To get their revenge, Danny and his father try to think up plans to stop the great shooting party on the first of October. Will they succeed? Read the book to find out what happens!

I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys Roald Dahl.

Book Review
This is a story about two investigators called Mango and Brash. They solve interesting and funny crimes and catch supervillains. It is written like a comic book and has loads of bright, funny pictures. My favourite part was when they got flushed down the stinky toilet and into the sewers. They then had to go through a car wash to clean up. They are always doing silly things.
Other characters have funny names like Dr Doodledoo, Crackerdile, CiCi Boringstories and Houdino.
Mango is my favourite character because he does some great breakdancing.
At the end of the book there are instructions about how to draw some of the comic book characters.
I’m looking forward to reading the next two books about them coming out soon.

Daisy and The Trouble With Zoos

Book Review
I really enjoyed this book that I read to my mum. I have read quite a few of these books and they are really funny and Daisy gets into trouble most of the time. This book is about a special trip to the zoo for her birthday treat, but there are many things that happen in this story that gets Daisy into trouble more than once.
Daisy is about 8 years old and has lots of friends at school. She is a very active character and not very patient at all.

The Famous Five: Five Go To Smuggler’s Top

Book Review
Julian, Dick and Anne go to stay with their cousin George and her dog Timmy at Kirriemuir Cottage but on the first night, to their horror, the huge ash tree in the garden falls onto the house and they have to go and stay somewhere else for the holidays. The house that they end up in is on top of a high hill, surrounded by boggy moor land, and has secret passages and adventure in the air. It is all peaceful until one night they see a light flashing out of one of the house’s high towers…
I’ve enjoyed reading all of the famous five books and I think this was one of the best. I would recommend it to people who like adventures and mysteries.

Hetty Feather

Author Jacqueline Wilson

Review by Fergus

Year Group 3

Book Review
This book is written as a diary and is about a girl called Hetty who doesn’t have a Mummy or Daddy. It is set in the Victoria age.
At the start of the diary, Hetty lives with a foster family before going back to the Foundling Hospital to live and to learn new skills.
Hetty is strong willed and this sometimes gets her into trouble!
My favourite character is Ida who works at the Foundling Hospital because she is very kind to Hetty and gives Hetty extra food.
I think I am very lucky that I don’t have bread and butter every day and I have a kind girl called Isabella as my sister, unlike Hetty.
My favourite part of the book was when the children from the Foundling Hospital were allowed 1 hour at the fun fair. Hetty went on the merry-go-round.
Hetty Feather was on television, which made me want to read the book. I enjoyed reading this book with Mummy and Daddy and I would definitely read about Hetty again.

Nania: The Silver Chair

Author C.S.Lewis

Review by Miriam

Year Group 3

Book Review
This book is about Eustace and Jill, two children who are at an awful boarding school called ‘Experiment House’ and they get whisked away to Narnia by Aslan to help find Prince Rilian, who has disappeared.
They make friends with Puddleglum the Marshwiggle and trek across tall ridges, snowy mountains and are nearly lost in a blizzard until they see the lights of a castle called Harfang. But the giants who live there have plans to “have them” for an Autumn feast…

They end up in an underground world where they are taken to the Queen of the Deep Realm by the Dark Dwellers. There they find an enchanted man but is he dangerous or on their side?
I loved this book because is it so adventurous and just as exciting as the other six Chronicles of Narnia.

The Children Of Noisy Village

Author Astrid Lingren

Review by Miriam

Year Group 3

Book Review
It’s set in a small village of three farmhouses: North Farmhouse, Middle Farmhouse and South Farmhouse. There are six children altogether: Bose, Lass, Ollie, Britta, Anna and “I”(the child who is writing the book). There are lots of fun, exciting, adventures stories, such as when they went cray-fishing, made caves in the hay barn and when they got stuck out in a snow storm. I enjoyed it.

The Gorilla Who Wanted to Grow Up

Author Jill Thomlinson

Review by Miriam

Year Group 3

Book Review
This book is excellent because it’s all about a troop of gorillas who live in the rainforest and mountains of Africa. The main character is Pongo, a young gorilla who is the oldest child of the group. There are two humans, one of them is an older one who is researching the gorillas and is called The Creeper by the gorillas because his is so thin. The other man isn’t very nice and he tries to shoot Pongo. I learnt about what gorillas eat, that they don’t like the rain, that they can climb up steep mountains that we can’t. I loved this book because I love gorillas and the rainforest. I think you should read it because it’s quite funny too.

Book Review
This is the second book of the Christmasaurus series.
In this book, William Trundle and the amazing Christmasaurus, with the help of The Winter Witch, set out to save Christmas from a greedy businessman, Mr. P Payne, who is trying to destroy Christmas!

My favourite part was when William met someone really special to him. (Read the book to find out who!)

I think that this book is suitable for Years 3 and up.

I really loved it.

The Famous Five: A Lazy Afternoon

Book Review
This book is about a group of 4 children called Anne, Dick, Julian, George and Timmy the dog. George suggested they have a lazy afternoon because it was a blazing hot day. The 5 slept in a copse next to a stream to cool down. Julian heard an engine from a motorbike. There were bad guys on the bike and Timmy cornered them and made them stay in a tree. The 5 helped save the day. I like this book because it was epic! My favourite part was when the 5 helped the police and saved the day.

Captain Underpants Three Pant-tastic Novels in One

Author Dav Pilkey
Review by Fergus

Year Group 3

Book Review
I thought this book was fantastic because there is a lot of detail. There are three different stories in this one book.

The stories are about two boys called George and Harold, who are very naughty and a superhero called Captain Underpants, also known as George’s and Harold’s head teacher.

George and Harold are in the same class at school and together they get up to all sorts of mischief.

I would definitely recommend this book to other children of a similar age to me but I don’t think Mr Batchelor would!

(I enjoyed these books a lot when my children read them! – Mr Batchelor)
