The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear, A Novel

Author:  Walter Moers

Review by: Joseph

Year Group: Year 4

Review:

Captain Bluebear is an actual bear who found himself floating in a walnut shell in the middle of the ocean. He is about to fall into the Malmstrom, a gigantic whirlpool, but is rescued by some Minipirates and is fostered on their ship. Soon, he grows too big for the ship and the Minipirates decide to  dump him on Hobgoblin Island. Hobgoblins enjoy it when people cry!

The book follows Captain Bluebear’s adventures as he travels to the Gloomberg Mountains to be educated by a professor called Nightingale who has seven brains. Bluebear goes on into the Great Forest, chased by a spider witch, into a Dimensional Hiatus, which teleports you between different dimensions and worlds. After that, Captain Bluebear ends up in the Demerara Desert, living in Tornado City for a while, before reaching Atlantis. There he is tricked into getting onto a slave ship, the biggest in the world, called SS Moloch. Can he escape and find a home that suits him?

I would recommend this book for someone who likes reading big books as it has 703 pages! It has great illustrations of Captain Bluebear’s adventures and worlds. It’s not like any other book I’ve ever read but almost all of it was exciting and I really wanted to keep reading it.

This book is about a girl called Mira who is starting Unicorn School. At Unicorn School the children get given a unicorn to help them. They do lots of fun stuff like glitter hunts but Mira’s unicorn, Dave, is grumpy and lazy. and not very sparkly at all. At first Mira and Dave didn’t get along together but near the end they did!

I liked this book because it was funny and made me laugh. My favourite part was when they slid down the rainbow slide!

Code Name Bananas is a really funny book because its about a boy, an old man and a gorilla!

They’re trying to save Gertrude the gorilla from the zoo in the middle of the war! She tried escaping from her cage because she was scared of the bombs. The zoo keeper was angry so he tried to put her down, so that’s why the boy and the old man wanted to save her.

When they save the gorilla they try to take cover in an spooky ,old seaside hotel, but its a trap!

My favourite part was when they had a big food fight in the palace at the end of the book.

This book is for people who like fun.

Little House in the Big Woods

Author:  Laura Ingalls Wilder

Review by: Indi

Year Group: Year 4

Review:

Little House in the Big Woods is the first of five books. It is set  in the woods of Wisconsin , America, in a little wooden house that Laura’s Dad made himself. Laura lives with her mum and her Dad “Ma and Pa”, her older sister Mary, her younger sister Carrie , her Cat called Black Susan and her dog called Jack, miles from anyone else, miles from the end of the woods. From where they lived, it was seven miles to the nearest town called Pepin named after Lake Pepin, meaning a lot of traveling in a small cart led by horses, just to go on a trip to town.

I like it because I find it interesting comparing Laura’s life in the eighteen hundreds to mine nowadays. I enjoying reading the songs that Laura’s Pa sings because they can be funny and they are copied word for word making you be able to imagine him singing it in real life.  It is a descriptive, funny and adventurous  book  and is the best autobiography I’ve read. I recommend it to both boys and girls ages 8-12 who are interested in American history and life in the olden days.

Nania: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Author C.S. Lewis

Review by Daisy

Year Group 4

Book Review
The main characters are, Lucy, Peter, Edmund and Susan.

I liked this book because each new place has it’s own story to tell and that every story is different. Like London had the sad story of war to start with then the professor’s house had a story of how they got to live life away from home. Narnia had a story of how they fought the White Witch or the Evil Queen of Narnia, whichever you prefer to call her. My favourite place in this book is Narnia, the magical world of talking horses and talking lions, where you find half men, half horse or goat. Sadly though you also find not so nice characters in Narnia like the White Witches Army!

I have read the book and watched the movie and I prefer the book because you get to imagine what everything and everyone looks like! (And the baddies look a lot nicer in my imagination!)

I recommend it for ages 8+
