The Secret Seven

Author:  Enid Blyton

Review by: Thomas

Year Group: Year 5

Review:

I choose this book because when I was young I read the Famous Five and now I have the Secret Seven collection. I really liked the book because there are lots of adventures and stuff. I didn’t know about the Secret Seven before I started the Book. I think an adventurous person would like this book. Collin forgot the code to go in the meeting place that was being held in a shed because he is a forgetful person, I think he is happy at the start of the book, anxious in the middle when Jack was lost and Colin was worried about him, then I think Colin was happy at the end.

Review:

This is a story about a boy that lived in Afghanistan in a cave. One day a dog came to the cave with a cut on her leg. The boy named Aman helped her with her cut on her leg but his mother and grandmother didn’t know about it. Aman named the dog Shadow and they became friends.

There was a war in Afghanistan and Aman went on a big dangerous journey to England to try to get away from the Taliban. There are some sad parts in the book but good things too.

I really like the book because in the end it was a happy ending and I like happy endings.

Siblings Simon, Patricia, Evelyn and Larry are evacuated during the Blitz in 1945. They end up in a massive house owned by a female professor. When Larry stumbles upon an old library door, nobody believes him until the professor tells them about an old man who people called a magician, who went through the door about a hundred years ago and never came back.

When British soldiers suddenly arrive at the house and start shooting, the children hide in the top room. Just as a soldier comes thumping up the stairs, the magic library door appears. Escaping through, Larry leads the others to the “Read” aisle where he went before and they end up in a field where the adventure really begins…

The story was exciting and I would recommend it to anyone who likes adventures.

Review:

Fox and Fibber, the Petty-Squabble twins, have snooty, rich and selfish parents who teach them to stamp all over other people’s feelings and compete against each other. It all changes when they find themselves on the Here And There express train, going to an unmapped kingdom called Jungledrop. Fox has a magical Phoenix tear given to her by an old man, Casper Tock, but she thinks magic is make-believe.

The twins have to journey through dark avenues, creepy forests and murky swamps to find the evil Morg, who is trying to destroy all of the goodness of Jungledrop and turn it into her own horrid kingdom. Will Fox and Fibber survive…?

I thought this book was amazing, it made me feel as if I was there, and I recommend it to people who love adventure.

Review:

I really enjoyed reading and looking through this book as it was really good reading about the history of tractors starting in the 1800 to now.

My favourite tractor was the JCB Fastrac which is a modern tractor.

But I loved reading about the old steam traction engines. My favourite was the Charles Burrell and Sons, built in 1919 called Cornish Maid.

Days Of The Knights

Author:  Christopher Maynard

Review by: Sasha

Year Group: Year 5

Review:

The book ‘Days of The Knights’ is brilliant about the life of a lord’s son. It tells the boy’s life from when he was a baby to adulthood. Also, in the margin are the definitions of words used in the book. I learnt lots from this.

The child from the story was rescued by the nursemaid from an attack and soon the boy became became a page and then became a knight.

They have beautiful illustrations and at the end of the book explains how the castles are empty and why the kings and lords left. Also a ghost tale is in the margin (at the back). SPOOKY!

In the glossary it includes all the facts in the book. If you want to find about the boy, then go read the book!

Moon Dog

Review:

Moon Dog is a really good book because it talks about dogs and its good for people who like dogs. There is a girl called Delilah and a boy called Marcus. They are best friends, they both want a dog but their mum and Marcus’s Nana are not allowing it. Marcus is only being looked after by his Nana because Marcus’s mum went away with her boyfriend and Marcus’s dad is in a sadness cloud and won’t to get out of bed so Nana has to look after him too. Delilah doesn’t want Marcus to join the Cinder Steet Boyz because they are bad news and she will not be friends with him if he does. There are sad bits. But after that it’s really good. There are men called Leopard Tattoo and Nose Ring in the book that are bad and put dogs in cages. But Marcus and Delilah helped the dogs and Leopard Tattoo and Nose Ring are sent to prison. The book has a happy ending because… Read it to find out!

The Lord of the Rings

Author:  J.R.R. Tolkien

Review by: Sophia

Year Group: Year 5

Review:

The Lord of the Rings is the sequel to The Hobbit and although very long it is just as good. It is a quest to destroy the ring that Bilbo found (read The Hobbit). If the quest fails then Middle Earth will be occupied by orcs. Nine companions set out to do this , two men, one elf, one dwarf, a wizard and four hobbits. One of the hobbits called Frodo bears the ring.

There are a few battles in this story and quite a bit of gore but it isn’t too scary.

I would recommend this book for age nine and up bookworms as it is very long.
